Weathering the redundancy storm

One of Scotland’s largest business support organisations is launching a series of briefings to help business owners steer their businesses successfully through the uncertain economic climate.

Following claims from the Chartered Management Institute that almost 70% of managers surveyed in Scotland work in an organisation where redundancies have already taken place, The GO Group are now launching a series of briefings aimed at helping business owners to make the right decisions if they are forced to lay off staff.

Lesley Meechan, Director of Learning and Development at The GO Group, said: “We know that many Scottish businesses are making extremely difficult decisions at the moment and it’s never an easy process, particularly for smaller organisations. For that reason The GO Group has launched a programme of business support to guide business owners and managers through the minefield.”

She added: “No business owner ever looks forward to making redundancies, but with 85 businesses going bust each day, difficult decisions have to be made. However, when the time comes there are procedures which should be followed and could make a real difference to all involved.”

The briefings, due to begin in February, will address the common failures of business owners when making employees redundant, employment law compliance and motivating remaining staff during the recession.

Meechan added: “The key to any business’s success is ensuring that its people are achieving and delivering the right results. In the current economic climate, the businesses that will be able to weather the storm are those that have motivated and focused people who are clear about what is required of them.”
