Glaswegians top innovation charts

28th Septmber 2008

Go GroupGlasgow has beaten Edinburgh to be crowned Scotland’s most innovative city.

According to the latest statistics released by The Innovators Counselling and Advisory Service for Scotland (ICASS), Glaswegians account for 15.8% of Scotland’s innovation activity, with residents seeking the most innovation and invention support from ICASS.

The capital came a close second with 13.5% of Edinburgh residents seeking support for an invention or innovation.

The figures come as the nation’s biggest talent search draws to a close following a four month campaign to find the best Scottish inventors and innovators.

The John Logie Baird Awards, organised by the GO Group in partnership with Biggart Baillie, LINC Scotland, NESTA and the University of Glasgow, are open to both individuals and companies from across the region who will compete to win £20,000 worth of product support and marketing support.

Isabell Majewsky, chief executive of GO Group said: “Scotland has an established pedigree of inventors and innovators from John Logie Baird to Alexander Fleming, so it’s fantastic to see that we’re still a thriving innovation nation. Glaswegians should be very proud of their track record when it comes to invention and innovation.”

The figures also revealed that the Highlands and Islands beat off competition from Aberdeenshire, Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire, accounting for almost 9% of innovation activity.

The lowest level of activity came from the Western Isles with 0.6% of the Scottish total and Midlothian which accounted for 0.7%.

Majewsky added: ““What is pleasantly surprising is the level of innovation in areas such as the Highland and Islands and the rest of Lanarkshire which have done extremely well.”

The John Logie Baird Awards have been launched to recognise the achievements of Scottish inventors and innovators through a structured programme of support, from patent registration, prototype development and eventual commercialisation throughout Scotland and the rest of the world.

The deadline for receipt of entries is 29 September. For further information or to apply visit www.johnlogiebairdawards.co.uk
