Entrepreneurial spirit alive and well, despite downturn in new businesses
1st October 2008
The number of new businesses launched in Scotland has dropped compared with this time last year, but the economic spirit is still alive and well.
The latest new business start-up statistics released yesterday by the Committee of Scottish Clearing Bankers (CSCB) show a decrease of almost 3,000 new companies. The number of new businesses launched in the second quarter of 2008 is 5,465. The figure last year was 8,395.
Ceri Rogers, organiser of New Start Scotland, the country’s largest exhibition for new starts in business, said: “Despite the number of new businesses dropping compared with this time last year, it is encouraging to see that over 10,000 new business ventures have still been launched in 2008 – the year of the credit crunch.”
“This shows that, despite Scotland facing an economic downturn, the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in the majority of the country.”
“New Start Scotland aims to boost these figures even further by providing entrepreneurs of all ages, no matter what their idea is, a starting point from which to launch their business with a bang. 2009’s show will be focussing on providing the support and help that entrepreneurs need to turn their business dreams into reality.”
A survey by New Start Scotland of over 1,000 business hopefuls revealed that, despite having fears over the economy, 86% of fledgling SME owners were determined to launch their new venture this year. Only 14% said that they would be postponing their launch until the economy became more stable.
Mr Rogers added: “New Start Scotland proves that, despite the credit crunch, there is still a great appetite in Scotland to be your own boss.”
“It’s encouraging that in the face of a possible recession more Scots than ever still want to start their own companies. But entrepreneurs need to be equipped with as much information as possible.”
Every year, over 8,000 wannabe entrepreneurs flock to the SECC to find out how to get their idea off the ground and how to grow their business further and faster. Now in its fifth year, New Start Scotland is proof that the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Scotland, despite 2008 being billed as the year of the credit crunch.
With over 120 exhibitors, 60 seminars as well as a variety of workshops and live features, New Start Scotland provides unrivalled business guidance for entrepreneurs trying to get their idea off the ground and those looking to grow their business further and faster.
The exhibition regularly attracts well known entrepreneurial speakers such as underwear tycoon Michelle Mone of Ultimo, former Dragons’ Den panellist Rachel Elnaugh of Red Letter Days fame, Chris Gorman OBE formally of The Gadget Shop and Tim Waterstone of Waterstone’s bookshops.
Anyone thinking of starting up their own business or looking to expand an existing business can benefit greatly from New Start Scotland. The event is completely free and provides the chance for unrivalled business guidance. Visit www.newstartscotland.com for further information.
