Smart Scots splash their cash in face of credit crunch

5th August 2008

MotorpointSmart Scottish consumers have saved over £8.3 million on current franchised car dealer prices in a record breaking first six months of 2008.

As the credit crunch celebrates its first anniversary, new figures released by  Motorpoint, the car supermarket giant, reveal that its customers saved a total of £83.5m between January and June 2008.

Based on its current performance, Motorpoint remains well on track to sell over 35,000 new and nearly new cars this year with sales up 7.6% year on year – despite the credit crunch.

The company’s online arm – motorpoint.co.uk – also continues to be a hit with Scots. So far this year some 1.8m people have visited the site.

David Shelton, Managing Director of Motorpoint said: “We launched our business model a decade ago with the aim of transforming the way in which people bought cars. The savings we have been able to achieve so far this year show just how far we have come towards achieving that goal.

“Add the fact that, as an independent, we are able to react very quickly to changes in the market, and you can see why Motorpoint is proving so popular with Scottish customers looking for genuine value for money when buying their next car.”

NOTES TO EDITORS

Founded in 1998, Motorpoint is the UK’s number one car supermarket group. It currently operates from five locations – Burnley, Derby, Glasgow, Newport and Peterborough.

In 2007 Motorpoint increased sales and saved around 30,000 retail customers a total of £144m against the recommended retail prices to be found on franchised dealers’ forecourts – an average of almost £5,000 per car. Last year, the company also repeated its achievement of selling a car into every post code area in the UK.

With projected total annual sales of 35,000 units, Motorpoint has helped to change the face of car retailing in the UK offering motorists a vast choice of new and nearly new cars – almost all makes and models – at unbeatable prices. Motorpoint is currently listed at number 83 in the Sunday Times Top Track 250.
