Scottish ambulance driver pleads guilty to defrauding the NHS

June 11th 2008

Counter Fraud ServicesA volunteer driver with the Scottish Ambulance Service has pled guilty to defrauding the NHS.

David Lawson, (57) a volunteer patient transport service driver from Dalkeith, submitted mileage claims for the journeys he had undertaken between 2001-2004, inflating the actual miles driven.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court saw Mr Lawson fined £250 and ordered to pay a further £750 in compensation to the Scottish Ambulance Service.

The case was investigated by NHSScotland Counter Fraud Services (CFS) after being referred by the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Maggie Worsfold, CFS communications manager, said: “Fraud in the health service will not be tolerated. By pleading guilty Mr Lawson recognised that he acted dishonestly.

“Those who commit fraud will be pursued rigorously with a view to ensuring that NHS funds are spent on patient care as intended.”

CFS is dedicated to eradicating all fraud against the NHS.  Working in close partnership with other NHS Scotland organisations, they have successfully delivered savings in excess of £14 million since their inception in 2000.

Counter Fraud Services in Scotland will continue to work with the honest majority of people involved with the NHS to promote the message that frauds against the NHS is unacceptable and will lead to prosecution.
