Government red tape to blame for Scotland’s small firm shortage
12th February 2008
The Government complicates things too much for the next generation of business leaders, according to one of Scotland’s top female entrepreneurs, underwear tycoon Michelle Mone.
Speaking ahead of the New Start Scotland exhibition - Scotland’s largest business exhibition (SECC, 14th & 15th March) - Michelle, who founded underwear giant MJM International, said: “The government is making it harder and harder for people to run commercial businesses.”
“It’s hard enough for a start-up to get going, but when you’ve got so much red tape like corporation tax - it needs to be simpler for businesses starting up.”
“Trying to deal with all the rules and regulations as well as the logistics can become a full time job in itself when entrepreneurs should be focusing on themselves and their products.”
Michelle is just one of the UK’s top female entrepreneurs set to share their highs and lows of the business world with thousands of Scotland’s start-ups at Scotland’s biggest business event – New Start Scotland – when it returns to the SECC next month (14th & 15th March).
Former BBC’s Dragon’s Den panellist Rachel Elnaugh will also be on hand to share her ups and downs. Experiencing both stellar success and crashing failure with her company Red Letter Days, Rachel is determined to pass on the wisdom that comes from these experiences. Having been involved on the board of the North East Enterprise Trust and having an insight into the way Scottish Enterprise is changing the way it supports new businesses via the Business Gateway, Rachel warns that business support organisations must be careful not to bypass the future generation of entrepreneurs.
She said: “It is dangerous to remove support for businesses which are not deemed to have the potential for growth. This is very difficult to assess – for example would a budding Anita Roddick be accidentally written off as a ‘lifestyle entrepreneur’? “What the Scottish economy needs is more financial support and incentives for business start-ups.”
Michelle and Rachel are just a couple of the business experts who will be on hand to provide vital information to those looking to start and grow their own business.
Following the success of last year’s New Start Scotland exhibition where over 8,000 entrepreneurs attended to find out how to get their idea off the ground and how to grow their business further and faster, New Start Scotland is back for a fourth year running with over 120 exhibitors and 50 free seminars on over.
Anyone thinking of starting up their own business or looking to expand an existing business can benefit greatly from New Start Scotland. The event is completely free and provides the chance for unrivalled business guidance.
