07/08/06 – GLASGOW DOCTOR SOLVES MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS PROBLEMS FROM THE INSIDE OUT
Top actress tries treatment
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients from all over the world - including Taggart actress Alison Peebles - are turning to Scottish GP, Dr Tom Gilhooly for his help in treating one of the most difficult diseases of modern times.
The Glasgow doctor has created an entirely new approach to MS treatment, based around a healthy balanced diet, teamed with a multi-nutrient supplement designed specifically for MS patients. Every element in the tablet has been chosen thanks to extensive research via scientific studies and consultation with dieticians and physicians across the world.
The supplement includes eight of the most important nutrients for those with MS, and since they are all packed into one capsule, costs a fifth of the high street equivalent price, and reduces the number of pills to swallow.
Tackling a difficult disease
A disease of the central nervous system, MS affects the motor abilities of the body. In the most extreme cases it can leave sufferers unable to move, speak or see. There are an estimated 10,500 people with MS in Scotland, more per capita than anywhere else in the world.
Dr Gilhooly treats 64 sufferers at his private clinic in Glasgow and it was their experiences which prompted him to try and tackle the condition from new angles. As well as prescribing leading treatments such as LDN – a drug originally used to treat opiate drug addicts, and Aimspro – a treatment made from serum in goat’s blood – he started to consider how his patients might benefit from making dietary changes.
Hit and miss supplementation
Dr Gilhooly found that over half of his patients were taking vitamin and mineral supplements, normally unsupported by either nutritional testing or the medical profession. This DIY approach led to some weird and wonderful combinations which in some cases were logical and appropriate.
However, others were unconsciously duplicating supplements, taking omega 3 and cod liver oil for example, or taking pills of limited value such as manganese. All of this supplementation was also vastly expensive, and several patients were forced to give up taking anything as they felt they couldn’t afford the pills.
Baseline Plus™ contains calcium - vital for muscles and bones, magnesium - important in maintaining correct electrical balance in muscle and nerve cells, selenium - which supports proper function of immune system and is seen at low levels in MS patients, as well as zinc, vitamin D, chromium polynicotinate, ginkgo biloba, and pine bark extract, all of which have been shown to help with MS.
Hard hitting DVD helps others to understand
Taggart actress Alison Peebles, who has worked extensively to highlight MS, is one of Dr Gilhooly’s patients. She has just started taking the Baseline Plus™ supplements, along with Omega 3 and Omega Spark vitamin supplements.
She said: “Multiple Sclerosis is a disease which is often ignored by the medical profession, as it is just so difficult to predict and control. Dr Gilhooly’s approach is refreshing, as he has willingly taken up the fight for MS patients, creating medically-sound dietary advice and supplementation.”
Peebles, 52, wrote and starred in a hard-hitting BBC documentary “Multiple” earlier this year, which tries to help others deal with the condition. Dr Gilhooly has decided to offer the dvd free with the supplements, as he believes it can help others come to terms with their illness.
Charity donation with each bottle
He said: “We want other people to see the impact of MS on the patient and create greater understanding of the disease. Alison’s film helps to show this and deserves a wider audience. We are distributing Baseline Plus worldwide and have already had orders from America. It will be great for ‘Multiple’ to be seen there. We’re also giving £1 from each bottle of Baseline Plus to the LDN Research Trust, a charity dedicated to research into MS.
