22/6/2007 - PIZZA BECOMES LATEST HEALTHY FOOD FOR GLASGOW SCHOOL DINNERS!

Domenico Crolla at a schoolAward-winning chef Domenico Crolla, creator of the world’s most expensive pizza, is serious about pizza – and this week it officially becomes a healthy food for Glasgow’s school kids! Domenico will host on 20 June 2007 a day of cooking demonstrations at his former school, St Denis’s in the East End of Glasgow.

Pizza is often seen as junk food treat or a quick fix meal but not something that people choose to cook themselves. Domenico wants to make people realise they don’t need to phone for a pizza. Instead it will be quicker, easier and healthier to create their own recipes in their own kitchens.

Domenico said: “Pizza tends to be frowned upon when good nutrition is discussed. I want to show that pizza is a simple dish that is both entertaining for the whole family to make and is also good for you.”

“With the Scottish Executive’s Schools Health Promotion and Nutrition Bill passed in March, one of highlights includes local authorities having the power to provide pupils with healthy snacks and drinks. This is perfect for pizza as not does it appeals to pupils but can be made in various ways to be highly nutritional and healthy.”

Domenico proposes to take budding chefs through every stage of creation, from choosing the right utensils to sourcing dough balls. He will give cheat’s tips for giving a pizza that stone-baked taste and talk about which ingredient flavours complement each other. He will even offer solutions for those who may never have had a pizza before due to gluten or tomato allergies.

In this way the learner pizza maker will be able to progress steadily from ready bought supermarket ingredients to gaining confidence in creating their own doughs, sauces and toppings. They will be also able to use Domenico’s essential instructions to try new twists for school lunch box snacks, family dinners or even dinner parties.

Yvonne McAllister, head teacher at St Denis’s said: “This is part of the school’s drive to attain health promoting status and promote healthy eating. Domenico is emphasising the use of healthy ingredients to children and parents who will work together to design and make their own pizzas.

Pupils will learn about basic nutrition concepts and healthy eating messages from Domenico. Not only do we benefit from his nutritional expertise but also from his professional background.

This exciting event is further enhanced by the school’s working partnership with a school in Ferentino in Italy which is part of St Denis’s Comenius International Education project. The children share their ideas and experience with their friends in Italy.”

The event is by the world’s number one authority on the subject, Domenico Crolla – the UK pizza designer of the year, inventor of the world’s most expensive pizza and 2007’s only British entrant in the World’s Pizza Championships..
