8/5/2007 - LABOUR TAKES A MINI SWIPE AT SNP LEADER
The Labour party has added some serious vroom to their election campaign by becoming the first organisation to utilise new technology which beams a humorous cartoon with a serious message into passers-by mobiles.
The cartoon tells the tale of a wee boy called Little Alex who wants to fly to London every week. He's packed his bags, and he can't wait to leave the cold of Scotland. And he's not happy to be told that this will all stop if he becomes leader in Scotland. The Labour caption says he's not thought things through.
Labour are using an entirely new technology to get the message through to a younger audience – typically the hardest voting audience to reach. A specially adapted mini car with multicoloured flashing panels will be positioned in main streets at night. Passers by in Glasgow City Centre, who have been stopping in their tracks to take notice of the mini, are automatically offered a free Bluetooth video message via their mobile phones giving them the chance to download the cartoon - and Labour gets vital information in return about the number of phones found and the amount of downloads made.
This new technology by Scottish advertising company motomedia ltd – which until now has been science fiction in futuristic films such as Tom Cruise’s Minority Report - features projected images on the car’s roof and bonnet, turning a normal mini into an almost real life advert.
David Cairns, MP said: “Alex Salmond walked away from the Scottish Parliament once already and is set to walk away again on Thursday. Little Alex is a humorous way to get over an important message - when the going gets tough, Alec gets going."
The idea is the brainchild of Glaswegian Kenny MacLean, managing director of motomedia.
Kenny explained: “Our technology turns the panels of the car into a mobile show-stopper. The flashing mini creates outstanding audio-visual theatre in any location and, coupled with Bluetooth, represents a new and powerful method of attracting voters.”
He added: "We are very excited about the motomedia concept and feel the mini is the perfect platform to identify with a younger audience.”
“motomedia technology in the car allows us to capture data such as the age, gender and viewing times of passers by – something that has never been seen before on the high street.”
The Labour cartoon will only be available to view using new technology such as Bluetooth and online. The cartoon will not be shown on TV.
The launch of the new mini follows on from the recent success of the world’s first ‘talking’ shop window which was launched in London. motomedia technology transformed an empty shop window into a real life myspace for the launch of American band LCD Soundsystem’s new album, Sound of Silver. The glass in the window was transformed into a speaker where passers by could listen to a track off the band’s new album as well as watch a video of the band, played directly onto the shop glass and visible in daylight.
