20/4/2007 - SCOTTISH MUSSEL FARM COMES TOP IN INDUSTRY AWARD

Blueshell Mussels - Micheal LauresonScottish shellfish company, Blueshell Mussels, part of the Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group (SSMG) has come out top in a prestigious industry award.

The 2007 Aquaculture Today – Fit For the Future Awards recognise innovative individuals and companies operating within the aquaculture industry. Blueshell Mussels, based in Brae, Shetland, won the shellfish section, having recently invested £500,000 in new production facilities – aimed at propelling the Scottish mussel farming industry to the forefront of the European market.

Michael Laurenson of Blueshell Mussels and chairman of SSMG said: “We are very pleased to have won this award. The standard was very high and we weren’t expecting to win, but it is nice to be recognised within the industry for all the work that we do, both here at Blueshell Mussels and at the Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group.”

"We've had an extremely busy past few years so it's a great credit to the dedication and hard work of our team who deserve equal recognition for their commitment in growing the business."

Shetland’s shellfish farmers are continuing to benefit from the brand new production facility recently installed at Blueshell Mussels. The new purpose built mussel grading centre has the capacity to handle in excess of 2,000 tonnes per year, accounting for over 60% of Shetland’s shellfish produce.

Donny Gillies, SSMG managing director, said: “It’s great news that Blueshell Mussels has won this top award, not only for Michael and his team, but for all of our members in the co-operative as well.”

“As the current boom in mussels we are seeing continues, new installations like the one at Blueshell Mussels help to expand and increase the ranges of products we are able to offer.”

Agriculture AwardsTwo other SSMG members were shortlisted for the awards - Loch Striven Mussel Farm were nominated in the shellfish category while Kames Marine Fish Farm were nominated in the Fin Fish category.

The winners were announced last night at a special gala industry awards dinner in Edinburgh.
