17/4/2007 - INDUSTRY AWARDS PUT SHETLAND MUSSELS ON THE MAP

Scottish Shellfish Marketing GroupShetland shellfish farmers, who are members of the Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group (SSMG), are pleased to be involved in the prestigious industry award for one of their innovative mussel products.

SSMG’s 1kg Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) mussels have been shortlisted in the fish and seafood retail product section of the sixth Scottish Food and Drink Excellence Awards.

The MAP product is produced using the finest Scottish rope-grown mussels and packaged in Shetland.

Michael Laurenson ,Chairman of SSMG said: “The  MAP  packaging  delivers  mussels  in  peak  condition  sealed  in  an atmosphere  scientifically  designed  to exactly match that of the Shetland seashore where they were harvested.”

“As our mussels are  supplied  in  the revolutionary  MAP  packaging, consumers are now be able to enjoy fresh Scottish rope-grown mussels that remain fresher, moister and plumper for longer.”

“The packaging is also a lot stronger, giving greater protection to the mussels themselves, as well as ensuring an additional three to four days product life.”

The MAP product was first introduced to the UK consumer market by SSMG last year and is currently sold exclusively in UK Waitrose stores.

The awards are a celebration of the highly successful Scottish food and drink industry. Sponsors include the Grocer magazine, Scottish Development International and the Scottish Executive’s healthyliving campaign.

Shortlisted and winning companies can use the Awards to showcase their products to buyers and consumers, plus benefit from the amount of free publicity the Awards generate. All winning companies receive a framed Certificate with an exclusive Scottish Food & Drink medal. Winning and shortlisted companies are entitled to use the Excellence Awards logo on their packaging and promotional materials.

The technology to replicate the seashore atmosphere was developed by Dutch firm PRINS & DINGEMANSE.  SSMG has linked their scientific breakthrough with new packaging technology from Norwegian experts POLIMOON to provide UK customers with the world’s first high-tech fresh mussel packaging. As well as delivering fresh mussels, SSMG will also be supplying fresh oysters using MAP packaging as well.
