28/3/2007 - GLASGOW WINTER TRANSFORMS INTO AFRICAN ADVENTURE
Over 100 guests will leave behind the wet and wind of Glasgow in winter to be transported into the wilds of Africa for a charity fundraising ball, this Friday 23rd March 2007.
Guests at the Glasgow the Caring City & Communitas/ETC Media annual party will see striking African art and powerful gospel singing transform a dreich evening in Glasgow into an exciting African adventure. Scotland’s influence in Africa has always proved powerful from the pioneering explorations of the famous missionary Dr Livingstone in the 19th century, to the recent outstanding success of the film “The Last King of Scotland” showing the relationship between Scotland and Uganda.
The exotic surroundings of Glasgow’s Winter Gardens - packed with banana trees, luscious palms and giant ferns – will provide the perfect backdrop for an exciting annual fundraising ball. Visitors will be treated to live music from the Glasgow Gospel Choir. Singing traditional African songs including “Begii” which means……
The evening – which aims to raise £10,000 to fund an exchange programme between Scottish children and their South African counterparts in the township of Khayelitsha - will continue with a sumptuous four course meal. Chefs will showcase a fusion of both African and Scottish delicacies and guests will also be able to sample Famous Grouse & mango cocktails offering a tropical twist on traditional tastes. Other highlights on the evening include a tombola and auction.
Rev Neil Gailbraith, founder of “Glasgow the Caring City” said:
“Since we began our work in Kosovo in 1999 we have spread the goodwill and support of Glaswegians throughout the world from Zambia to New York. Our work depends absolutely on public support here in Scotland, and so this year we are not simply asking people for money. Instead, we are offering them the chance to be transported to the heart of Africa, for a one off fabulous evening of entertainment.”
Fiona Duguid, marketing manager from Suio is attending the event. She said:
“This event should be a real treat, as it will give us a real chance to get into the spirit of the evening, with the steamy surroundings of the Winter Gardens and the seductive combinations of food, music and dance.”
Guests are encouraged to take up the challenge of adopting glamorous outfits for the evening from traditional kilts to African prints, and finish off the evening with a dance session provided by the Royal Navy big band.
Sponsors for the night include Encore Catering, The Edrington Group, Glasgow City Council’s Land Services and Suio Water who have provided 200 bottles of water to keep guests refreshed in the sub-tropical heat of the Glasgow glasshouse.
