28/3/2007 - WORLD’S FIRST PIZZA OLYMPICS KICK OFF IN ITALY
All eyes may be on London when talk of the 2012 Olympics arises, but over in Italy 400 hundred competitors from 41 different nations are already proving their agility and ability in a very different arena – the World’s First Pizza Olympics.
The first “Olimpiadi de Pizza” opened in Salsamaggiore, Italy, on Monday with a parade of contestants decked out in their national garb, including entrants from Bulgaria to Brazil and Australia to Algeria.
Sole entrant competition heats include best classic design, best gluten free pizza, and best pan pizza, but on Thursday the action will really heat up with teams of freestyling “pizza acrobats” competing for the gold medal prize.
Each team has ten minutes and up to ten members to perform a choreographed routine based around a piece of music of their choice. The World Pizza Champions team – who hail from America’s pizza capitals New York and Chicago - offered up an action filled piece based on the film “The Matrix” in 2005, and it is hoped that this year’s performance will be even more exciting.
But Domenico Crolla - proprietor of Bella Napoli in Glasgow and creator of the world’s most expensive pizza won’t be competing in the event – instead he has been thrust into the spotlight in the role of “international pizza guru”. Fresh from winning Silver at the Italian Chef Wars and placing as a finalist in the International Pizza Challenge in Las Vegas, he joins a line up of experts to judge the pizza-making skills of contestants from over 40 countries.
Over the next three days Domenico and his fellow judges - including consultant Maurice Abboudi who advises the world’s top chains such as Dominoes and Pizza Express - will pass comment in the fields of dough-tossing, twirling and of course, tasting the pizza.
Domenico Crolla said:
“I have seen the Chinese and Japanese teams practising and they are incredible, though the Americans will offer stiff competition I think. They perform tricks that I have never witnessed before like across-the-shoulders, three-at-a-time and ‘The Gemignani’ which consists of rolling two rounds of dough from opposite hands, then across your shoulders, so they cross behind your head.
“The tasting rounds have also been tough on me as you can imagine, well, on my waistline anyway, as I’ve had to sample some really great-tasting doughs and sauces. It’s been a real treat to see the other side of competitive life in pizza making.”
The grand final of the Pizza Olympics comes on Thursday evening where Miss Italy – otherwise known as model Claudia Andrealatti – will present the winners with their gold medals.
