1/2/2007 - SCOTTISH BUSINESSES LET MONEY GO BEGGING

Thursday 1st Feb 2007: Scottish small business owners are failing to make use of vital sources of finance, an independent report published in the run-up to Glasgow’s major business seminar event Think Finance reveals.

The report Barriers to Growth 2006, by the Federation of Small Businesses Scotland, shows that the proportion of Scottish businesses using bank loans plummeted by nearly a half from 41% in 2002 to only 26% in 2006.  The use of Executive-backed support organisations such as Business Gateway dropped sharply from 19% two years ago to only 5% in 2006. FSB Scotland says the main reason is “lack of awareness of these services.”

Hundreds of business owners and staff have signed up to attend Think Finance, at Glasgow’s Hilton Hotel on Thursday February 8th. Half of the event’s seminars are now fully booked, and waiting lists are filling up rapidly.

Says Organiser Patrick Bellew: “The FSB report explains why demand for Think Finance has been so high. Small business owners clearly find the financial support sector confusing, and so they tend to ignore it and plough their own furrow. It’s an unnecessarily tough way to survive in business”

The Think Finance event offers six seminars, covering topics as diverse as “Show Me The Money” which explains how to seek out the right funding to grow your business, and “You Should Be Certified” which shows how achieve essential financial qualifications.

It is one of a series of “Think ….” events planned for 2007, including Think Training, and Think I.T.
