15/2/2007 - THE WAY TO A WOMAN’S HEART IS THROUGH HER STOMACH
Glasgow chef Domenico Crolla has flown more than 1000 miles to create the world’s most expensive pizza for a charity eBay bidder. The pizza will be cooked up as an extra-special surprise Valentine’s meal for the winner’s wife, in the couple’s local restaurant in Rome.
Gold-topped pizza is Valentine's treat
The gold-topped pizza, created by award-winning Glasgow chef Domenico raised a massive £2,150 for charity after furious last-minute bidding on online auction eBay back in November 2006. Auctioned on behalf of UK charity the Fred Hollows Foundation, the 12 inch Pizza Royale 007 was won by Italian lawyer Maurizio Morelli, a gastro expert from Rome who enjoys collecting fine wines and truffles.
He has now decided to present the antipasto style treat - which includes lobster marinated in £1,300 Louis XIII Cognac, champagne-soaked Beluga caviar, Scottish smoked salmon and venison, as well as being topped with a shaving of edible 24 carat gold from the Queen’s jeweller Mappin & Webb – to his wife Sabrina for a surprise Valentine’s gift.
Worldwide publicity
The victorious bidder heard about the pizza after seeing it on Italian news, where the story has stirred up some controversy. Many Italian chefs are up in arms at the thought that a Scottish chef has created a new twist on traditional Italian recipes.
Domenico, who recently attended the Gambero Rosso (Slow Food) Conference in Rome, as a key speaker, said:
“This is the perfect romantic Valentine’s gift. We Italians are experts at ‘amore’ and I think this pizza will show that the way to a woman’s heart is definitely through her stomach! I can’t wait to create this pizza in Italy, using beautiful, top class ingredients.”
As a result of his world wide fame, Domenico has been invited to represent the UK in the World Pizza Championships in Las Vegas in March 2007, where he will be entering a pizza entitled “Pride of Scotland”, designed to showcase some of Scotland’s finest foods.
