10/1/2007 - SCOTTISH SHELLFISH MARKETING GROUP APPOINT NEW CHAIRMAN

Mike LaurensonThe Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group (SSMG) has appointed Michael Laurenson as their new Chairman.

Michael’s own mussel farm, Blueshell Mussels in Shetland, has helped towards a massive £500,000 boost for SSMG farmers with the recent installation of brand new production facilities aimed at propelling the Scottish mussel farming industry to the forefront of the £60m European Market.

Michael (38) said: “I take up the position of Chairman at a very exciting time for Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group. Demand for Scottish mussels, scallops and oysters has never been stronger, especially over the festive season. Our new ranges of international recipes are making a huge impact in every major UK supermarket, and our innovative packaging of fresh mussels has transformed the market – all due to the exceptional quality of produce offered by our farmers, and the dedication of the workforce in our processing plants. I look forward to driving ahead the remarkable growth we have experienced in the last year.”

Michael Laurenson, previously Vice Chairman, succeeds Walter Speirs who spent 14 years as Chairman. Walter will still remain as a director for SSMG. Roger Thwaites takes up the position as elected Vice Chairman in the interim.

Donny Gillies, SSMG Managing Director, said: “We are delighted Michael has accepted the position of Chairman. We are sad to see Walter step down and we thank him for his commitment and dedication in driving Scottish Shellfish to where it is today and the reputation it has within the industry. I hope Walter continues to play an active role within our group”

The Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group is the UK's premier producer of finest quality shellfish, supplying supermarkets, wholesalers and restaurants with mussels, oysters and scallops farmed from the crystal clear waters of sheltered sea lochs located along the full length of the West coast of Scotland and Shetland.
