18/12/2006 - NICOLA BENEDETTI JOINS HOSPITAL CHOIR FUNDRAISER
World famous violinist Nicola Benedetti will play at a carol concert organised by children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent on Friday 8th December 2006.
Nicola has been actively involved with CLIC Sargent since 2005 when she undertook a tour of British schools as part of a “Practice-a-thon”, which encouraged pupils of all ages to pick up their instruments and enjoy classical music.
In December, Nicola will join doctors, nurses and other hospital professionals at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall as they swap their stethoscopes for songsheets for the 28th time to raise money for the care of children with cancer. Last year the choir collected over £31,000 and they hope to smash their record this year with a target of £50,000.
Supporting children with cancer
With over 120 members from hospitals in Glasgow and beyond including Yorkhill, the Western and Royal Infirmaries and Wishaw General, the Glasgow Hospitals’ and Friends choir has been rehearsing hard for the last six weeks, at a base in St John’s Church in the West End of Glasgow. Led by conductor Ian McCrorie and supported by the Glasgow Chamber Orchestra the choir will sing unusual carols from around the world including “Te Harinui” or “Great Joy” a carol from New Zealand, and Gitchimanitou, a Native American song.
Children from Dalreoch Primary School will also be performing at the concert and the audience will be able to take part in a traditional singalong session with old favourites like Jingle Bells, Hark the Herald Angels Sing and the Holly and the Ivy.
Every day in Britain, 10 children and young people across the UK are diagnosed with cancer and leukaemia and all proceeds from tickets will go towards supporting young people affected with cancer and their families. This could be during treatment, funding specialist nurses and doctors, or helping to create special “homes from home” beside hospitals.
Suio water refreshes the choir
Organiser Richard Donald said:
“Over the last 27 years the concert has raised over £750,000 for the work of the CLIC Sargent in Scotland. The concert starts at 7.30pm and seats are priced at £7 upward With less than 200 tickets left we’re encouraging people to get a seat soon at what promises to be a great concert.
“I’d also like to say a big thank you to the main sponsors of the show, Foresters, Smith and McLaurin who are sponsoring the programme, and Suio who are refreshing the hard working volunteers, choir and orchestra with over 400 bottles of mineral water.”
