23/11/06 - CHANGING THE SMOKE AGE LIMIT A 'WASTE OF TIME'

Young SmokersSmoking cessation experts have today slammed proposals to raise the legal age for buying cigarettes from 16 to 18.

Experts from Anne Penman Laser Therapy (APLT) - who have helped thousands of people worldwide quit smoking using laser therapy over the past 14 years - criticised the planned legislation, branding it “absolute nonsense”.

Scottish clinic director Scot McKenzie said: “This new legislation is a waste of everyone’s time and a waste of taxpayers money. The Government could raise the age limit to 40 years old and it wouldn’t make any difference, as kids will still get hold of cigarettes. Putting the age limit up will only encourage children to smoke as cigarettes will become even more of a taboo – smoking, especially at school, will still be seen as ‘the cool thing to do’.”

“We believe that the Government needs to do more to tackle the problem of people taking up smoking in the first place. We need to see more in the way of education. There needs to be more in the way of positive health messages instead of constant negativity. The shock tactics don’t work with children any longer.”

Anne Penman Laser Therapy“Although we need to do more to prevent children from starting smoking, we also need to provide them with more support for those who do start smoking and want to quit.”

Notes to editors:

  1. Background information: Anne Penman invented her therapy programme while living in Glasgow, but it only really took off world-wide when an American organisation bought the concept and franchised it across the United States. Now she’s a household name in America with clinics in 17 States, clinics in Singapore and also expanding into South East Asia. The company has over 14 years experience of helping people to quit smoking for good.
  1. The laser therapy works by stimulating endorphins. Nicotine releases endorphins which gives the smoker the sense of relaxation. When people try to stop smoking, the sudden drop in endorphin levels leads to withdrawal symptoms. The laser therapy helps reduce the craving and stress of nicotine by stimulating endorphins. Unlike many other treatments to help people stop smoking, there is no replacement to continue putting nicotine into the body, so the laser treatment restores the body’s natural balance.
