21/11/06 - A TASTE OF THE HIGH LIFE FOR GLASGOW DINERS
Glasgow chef Domenico Crolla is throwing open the doors of his Shawlands restaurant Bella Napoli to a guest list of 100 diners, to give them a taste of some of James Bond’s favourite foods.
His “Pizza Royale 007” party on Monday 27th November at 7pm will celebrate a successful charity auction bid which saw a luxury antipasto pizza created by Domenico sell for over £2000.
The pizza, dreamt up by Domenico for a fundraiser on eBay, is currently being considered by the Guinness Book of Records in a bid to become the “world’s most expensive pizza.” Scottish chef Gordon Ramsay is the current record-holder for “the most expensive pizza commercially available”, with a £100 truffle topped creation on sale in his London restaurant Maze.
Domenico also recently took home the accolade “Pizza Designer of the Year” from the British Pizza & Pasta Association (PAPA). It was this competition win which led to Domenico creating the lobster and caviar topped pizza, for UK charity the Fred Hollows Trust. The luxury pizza ultimately sold to Italian lawyer Maurizio Morelli, a gastro expert from Rome who enjoys collecting fine wines and truffles.
Come down and taste luxury!
However, Domenico wants to give people in Glasgow the chance to sample some of the ingredients on the pizza including slices finished with shavings of edible 24 carat gold from the Queen’s jeweller Mappin & Webb.
Domenico said:
“I want to show people that they can think laterally about food, a pizza doesn’t just have to be pepperoni and cheese, but can include fine Scottish ingredients like venison and smoked salmon. We can also offer excellent vegetarian and kosher options. I got the idea for putting gold leaf on the pizza from a trip to Belgium where chocolates are often coated with gold, and I thought I’d bring the idea back to Scotland.”
To go along to the party at Bella Napoli simply call in to the restaurant at 85, Kilmarnock Road, Shawlands, Glasgow, G41 3YR and ask to add your name to the guest list, with a maximum of two guests signed up by one person.
