14/11/06 - BRITAIN'S FIRST MOBILE STOP SMOKING CLINICS COME TO MOTHERWELL
Britain’s first mobile stop smoking clinics are to make their first appearance in North Lanarkshire due to overwhelming demand from people desperate to quit since the smoking ban was introduced seven months ago.
Scottish based company Anne Penman Laser Therapy (APLT) have been inundated with calls to their helpline from thousands of people from all throughout the UK, who are desperate to quit smoking.
To help cope with the demand, APLT have introduced Britain’s first mobile smoking cessation units. Kitted out to replicate the existing relaxing clinics, the mobile units will make their debut appearance in Motherwell at the pedestrian precinct in the Brandon Parade shopping centre on Friday 3rd November from 10am – 4pm, as part of a country wide tour including stops in London, Manchester, Glasgow and Aberdeen.
The innovative smoking cessation treatment uses laser therapy to help people quit smoking by applying, a soft, cold, non-invasive laser to specific energy points on the body. This helps to stimulate endorphins - part of the body’s natural chemical which deals with the relief of pain and stress.
The laser treatment is completely safe and painless as well as drug-free. As well as the laser treatment, guidance advice and back-up support are also provided as key parts of the programme. Thousands of people worldwide have already benefited from the laser therapy including Coleen Nolan part of ITV’s Loose Women line up as well as BBC’s River City star Deirdre Davis.
Clinic Director Margaret-Ann MacKenzie said, “The demand from people wanting to quit due to the ban in Scotland has been so high that we needed to expand rapidly. The introduction of the mobile unit has helped us reach even more people than before.”
The mobile units have been hugely successful in other parts of the UK, having been on tour all over the country visiting workplaces, factory car parks, city centre locations and public events.
Margaret-Ann added: “The existing Scottish clinics are inundated with demands – so we are going where the need is with the mobile unit.”
“Shoppers will value the convenience of a mobile clinic in city centres, and delegates to exhibitions and conferences could take a little time out, and do something that could save their lives. We hope enlightened employers will give their staff time off to get the treatment they need, and maybe even subsidise it.”
