13/11/06 - GLASGOW RESTURANT WANTS A PIZZA THE JAMES BOND ACTION
Furious bidding has already started on a charity eBay auction for the world’s most expensive pizza. Cooked up by an award-winning restaurateur from Glasgow, the auction ends in just eight days time.
Part of a fundraising bid organised by the British Pizza, Pasta & Italian Food Association (PAPA) all proceeds from the auction will go to UK charity, The Fred Hollows Foundation (UK) which aims to prevent curable blindness in developing countries.
So far this year, more than 115m pizzas have been consumed both at home and in restaurants and Scots-Italian pizza maker Domenico Crolla hopes to appeal to the nation with his 12 inch “Pizza Royale 007”. The latest 007 actor, Daniel Craig has already been invited to put in a bid for the luxury creation.
Priceless ingredients are Bond’s favourites
An organic base will be topped with sun-blush tomato sauce and loaded with 007’s favourite ingredients, from lobster marinated in £1,300 Louis XIII Cognac, to champagne-soaked Beluga caviar, topped off with a shaving of edible 24 carat gold and rare white truffles.
Organisers are hoping that the pizza, which is worth over £1,500 in terms of ingredients, might sell for up to £2000, putting it into the Guinness Book of Records. Father of two Crolla, part of a famous Scottish family of pizza makers, will go to the house of the highest bidder and create the luxury pizza in their own kitchen, or the winner can come to one of Crolla’s restaurants if they prefer.
Domenico said:
“If any pizza was made to suit 007, this is it. Everyone loves a pizza as a treat, and this should be a real luxury experience. We chose the ingredients specifically for a character known to have expensive tastes by researching his favourite foods on specialist Bond websites.”
Saving sight costs as little as £16
Shaun Jones, CEO of the Fred Hollows Foundation said:
“It can cost as little as £16 to give a person their sight back using simple cataract removal operations, so if the pizza hits its target it will help over 125 people in the developing world to see again. We really hope that as many people as possible will get involved with the bidding, which ends next weekend.”
Jim Winship, director of the Pizza Pasta & Italian Food Association said:
“When Dominico walked away with the first prize in the “UK Best Pizza of the Year Award” beating off competition from Harrods, we knew we had to have him on board to create the world’s most expensive pizza too. It should be a real taste sensation.”
To witness the culinary skills of Dominico at first hand why not pay a visit to his restaurants: Italmania in Argyle Street, or Bella Napoli in Shawlands, or put in a bid to gain a pizza the action at www.ebay.co.uk search term “Pizza Royale 007”.
