22/09/06 - CAVEMAN HEALTH PLAN LAUNCHED BY GLASGOW DOCTOR
A Glasgow doctor is calling for unhealthy Brits to look at their diet – and telling them that they should try and eat more like cavemen.
Dr Tom Gilhooly - a GP in Glasgow’s East End for the last twenty years – offers an innovative health check up service from his Essential Health Clinic which measures levels of the vital essential fatty acids Omega 3 and Omega 6 in the bloodstream.
It is thought that in the days of cave men, the ratio of polyunsaturated Omega 3 and Omega 6 essential fatty acids (EFAs) in the blood stream was roughly equal. The EFAs balanced each other out to contribute equally to processes such as immune response, blood clotting, oxygen transport, kidney function and healthy joints and skin among others.
High fat in modern diets
However, because our modern diet often contains high levels of omega 6 fats, found in grains, vegetable oils, poultry and eggs, and very low levels of omega 3 fats found in walnuts, green leafy vegetables and cold water oily fish, many people are suffering with imbalances of Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratios of over 20 to one. This means that even when people take a fish oil capsule every day, they may need far higher doses to actually notice any effect.
Omega 3 Blood Test
The Omega Blood Test identifies the ratio of EFAs in the bloodstream and can show that even people who are actively trying to consume more Omega 3 may only be skimming the surface of the problem.
Dr Gilhooly said:
“By acting more like cavemen we would introduce more exercise into our daily routines by having to catch our food, and we’d also eat more raw greens gathered locally, and cold water fish, speared in nearby streams. When the ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 is too high, these less healthy fats appear in the membranes of our cells. The fat in the cell membrane is used to make hormones that work at cellular level. Omega 6 based hormones tend to have a very negative effect on overall health and skin quality, and can contribute to conditions like heart disease, cancer, depression, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Multiple Sclerosis.
“After analysing the blood sample results, which takes about two weeks, I give each person advice on the correct dosage of Omega 3 for their diet, and also tell them how to increase the nutrients that which improve Omega 3 absorption into the blood stream. This isn’t just a test for people who are ill, rather it can help in everyday life, giving you more energy and aiding concentration.”
Specialist dietary advice can change lifestyle
The test costs just £99 and is currently performed in specialist labs in America, though Dr Gilhooly hopes to bring the process to Britain to speed up the process still further.
Fashion marketer Richard McEon took the test and made radical changes to his lifestyle after getting the results. He said:
“I was feeling a bit lethargic and sluggish at work as I take a lot of long-haul flights which can really take their toll. My mum read about the test offered by Dr Gilhooly on his website and told me about it. I was a bit sceptical at first but thought I’d give it a try.
It turned out that my Omega 3 levels were way down, and I was also low on a lot of essential nutrients because I was eating on the run. Dr Gilhooly gave me great advice about the levels of Omega 3 that I needed, and also recommended Omega Spark – a multi-nutrient that increases the level of Omega 3 uptake in the blood. I feel like can step off a 12 hour flight now, and be ready for business at the other end.”
