Media Training Courses

Introductory Course
Level: Basic
Covering: Print, television and radio interviews. Key message development.

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

• Handle a call from a journalist confidently
• Develop and use effective Key Messages
• Understand the priorities and language of the journalist
• Avoid being misquoted or quoted out of context
• Deliver a short news interview on television

Intermediary Course
Level: Mid-complex
Covering: Inside journalism and inside your organisation – an in depth look at what journalists think of your organisation. The highlights of the day are the realistic, challenging and invigorating radio and television interview sessions. Radio skills can be booked at BBC studios.

Television interviews include 1-1 news and remote studio formats. By the end of the course participants will achieve all the skills of our introductory course plus:

• Structure and write a highly effective press release.
• Sell-in their story effectively to the press.
• Deliver a well-structured radio interview.
• Handle television news, and deliver an interview down-the-line.

Advanced Course
Level: Complex (recommended for experienced Senior Executives)
Covering: How to handle aggressive questioning and emerge with your reputation intact.  During the course of one intensive day, participants will gain an insight into how other organisations have handled the media onslaught – and will practice, in complete confidentiality, the techniques which effectively defuse probing questions.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

• Understand the dynamics of a critical media training campaign.
• Handle media enquiries before the interview.
• Develop vital key messages.
• Generate trust and professionalism during interviews.
• Perform confidently and calmly in the face of probing, persistent and critical questioning on radio and television.

Crisis Management
Level: Mid-complex
Covering: Giving senior, experienced spokespeople the ability to handle aggressive questioning during a crisis. With stimulated crises situations to consolidate newly learned skills.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

• Understand the dynamics of a critical media training campaign.
• Handle media enquiries before the interview.
• Develop vital key messages.
• Generate trust and professionalism during interviews.
• Perform confidently and calmly in the face of probing, persistent and critical questioning on radio and television.

• How to handle different interview styles
• How to handle awkward questions

Radio Training
Level: Mid-complex
Covering: A full day course for spokespeople who deal are likely to give interviews on local or national radio, but unlikely to need training in television techniques. Carried out in a full-spec broadcast radio studio.

• How to identify a strong story for radio
• How to build your media strategy to make the most of newspapers and radio
• How to prepare your key messages
• How to handle different types of interview: recorded, live, 1-1, debate, phone-in, local, national.
• How to handle different interview styles
• How to handle awkward questions.
• How to handle other contributors
• How to deal with technical problems

Television
Level: Mid-complex
Covering: A full day course for spokespeople who are likely to give interviews on local or national radio, but unlikely to need training in television techniques. Carried out in a full-spec broadcast radio studio.
